ALARMING MERCHANDISE DISPLAY SYSTEM

A display system (10, 100) for displaying an item of merchandise (18, 118) in a retail environment that allows a potential customer to handle the item while it is secured to the display system. The item is supported on a display shelf (14, 114)and is connected to a retractable cable (20, 120). The shelf is locked to a base (12, 112) by an alarm unit (16, 116). Unauthorized removal of the shelf, base or item of merchandise, or severing of the retractable cable or alarm unit will activate an alarm (72, 194). First and second locks (50, 144, 182) lock the alarm unit to the base.
