<p>The apparatus (12) for cutting film tubing (22) described herein is intended for use in a machine (10) for applying tubular labels (22a) to each of a series of containers (62) that are transported on a conveyor (64). The film tubing (22) is advanced incrementally through a ring gear (40) and a bore (38) in a platform (32) on which the ring gear (40) is rotatably mounted. A number of pinions (34) with attached cutting blades (36) are rotatably mounted to the platform (32) in positions to mesh with the ring gear (40). A planar disc (42) is mounted to a plurality of pinions (34) in a first embodiment or to the ring gear (40) in a second embodiment to prevent the ring gear (40) from moving more than a minimal amount in the axial direction. One of the pinions (34) is driven to rotate a single revolution when the film tubing (22) has been advanced. The driven pinion (34) causes the additional pinions (34) to rotate through rotation of the ring gear (40), causing the blades (36) to cut the film tubing (22).</p> |
