[Also in Divisions C2 and C5] A composition suitable for use in the bleaching of textile materials, e.g. of cotton, nylon or polyesters, comprises (i) a water soluble peroxygen compound, e.g. sodium perborate, percarbonate or persilicate, and (ii) a water soluble N-sulphonylimide of the formula in which R is an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms or an aryl group and Z represents the non-metallic atoms necessary to complete a cyclic imide having a non-condensed or condensed ring system. Specified N-sulphonylimides are N-benzenesulphonyl phthalimide, N-methanesulphonyl phthalimide, N-benzene sulphonylsuccinimide and N-methane sulphonyl succinimide. The composition may contain the N-sulphonyl imide and peroxygen compound in the mole ratio of 0.01:1 to 2:1 and may also comprise an anionic nonionic cationic or amphoteric detergent. The anionic detergent may be a soap, ammonium, substituted ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal higher alkyl benzene sulphonate, olefin sulphonate, higher alkyl sulphate, higher fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate, alkyl or aromatic poly (ethenoxy) ether sulphate, higher alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate, acylsarcosinate, acyl ester of an isethionate or acyl N-methyl tamide, the nonionic detergent may be a reaction product of a carboxylate, hydroxyl, amide or amine containing compound with ethylene oxide, the cationic detergent may be an amine or quaternary ammonium compound and the amphoteric detergent may be an N-long-chain alkyl amino carboxylic acid, N-long-chain alkyl imino dicarboxylic acid or N-long-chain betaine or a fatty imidazoline. The composition may also contain a builder, e.g. trisodium phosphate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphospate, sodium mono- or di-basic phosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sodium sulphate, borax or ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt, a fatty acid amide, xylene or toluene sulphonate, ethanol, ethylene glycol, hexylene glycol, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, cellulose sulphate, an alkyl or hydroxy alkyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, optical brightening agents, corrosion inhibiting agents, germicides and perfumes. In detergent compositions the peroxygen compound and N-sulphonylimide may be packaged in separate compartments of a watersoluble film packet or the N-sulphonylimide may be coated with an ethylene oxide or propylene oxide condensation product, polyvinyl alcohol or carboxymethyl cellulose. Bleaching may be effected at not more than 85‹ C. |
