In a two-phase punch-riveting process to join two pieces of sheet metal made of different types of metal, in the first phase a half-hollow rivet cuts through the first sheet of metal during a phase in which the obverse side of the first metal (41) is unsupported. In the second phase, the rivet continues through the second sheet metal (42) and is deformed.
