<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which the operating life of a paper transport member such as a transfer belt is prolonged. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 2 includes: a transfer belt 4 which transports paper Sa carried thereon along a first transport direction; image forming units 6Y-6K arranged along the belt; paper transport units 24b, 26b for transporting paper Sb to the image forming unit 6K along a second transport direction; and a transfer roller 40 for transferring a toner image on a photoreceptor drum 8K of the image forming unit 6K onto paper transported by the paper transport units along the second transport direction. In a color mode, a color image is formed on the paper Sa with a plurality of image forming units. In a monochrome mode, a monochrome image is formed on the paper Sb with the image forming unit 6K.
