PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hinge device capable of folding a cover body portion left and right to variously utilize the cover body portion, and having superior functionality, and to provide a portable telephone using the same. SOLUTION: This portable telephone is composed of the cover body portion composed of a receiver portion having a display image plane or the like, and a main body portion composed of a speaker portion having an operation key or the like, the cover body portion and the main body portion are foldable in the horizontal direction by a vertical shaft-like folding hinge portion, a base is integrally mounted on the folding hinge portion, and a stopper is mounted so that the rotation of the base is stopped at a position where the cover body portion is folded by 180°over a position where the cover body portion is folded left or right by 90°, when the cover body portion is rotated left or right, and the base is returned to an original position by being reversely rotated right or left by 180°from the stopped state.
