PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex which can give coated paper having excellent surface strength, water resistance, ink dryability, print gloss and antitack properties, and exhibiting excellent operability in coating. SOLUTION: The copolymer latex is obtained by emulsion-polymerizing a mixture comprising (a) 20-80% by weight of aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, (b) 0.5-10% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and (c) 10-79.5% by weight of another monomer copolymerizable with monomers (a) and (b). The copolymer has one glass transition temperature in the range of -100 to 60°C, a range of the transition region of 20°C or above and satisfies following formula 1, -0.1≤(logE2-logE1)/(T2-T1)≤-0.01, wherein T1 is the temperature at the boundary between the glass region of the copolymer and its transition region, T2 is the temperature at the boundary between the transition region and a rubbery region, in which E1 and E2 are each the modulus of elasticity of the copolymer at temperature T1 and T2 respectively.
