PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium conveyance device capable of improving the throughput by reducing a time period for movement of a carriage at each conveyance of a medium, and a recorder. SOLUTION: In the case where an operation of a head is completed during the movement of the carriage 153 from one side end to the other side end, the carriage 153 temporarily stops after moving by a predetermined distance, and then moves to a prescribed position to stop thereon. In the case where the operation of the head is completed during the movement of the carriage 153 from the other side end to the one side end, when the position of the carriage 153 is at the side of the other side end rather than the prescribed position, the carriage 153 stops on the prescribed position. When the position of the carriage 153 is at the side of the one side end rather than the prescribed position, the carriage 153 moves by the predetermined distance to temporarily stop thereon, and then moves to the prescribed position to stop thereon. As the carriage 153 always moves to a switching means provided to the prescribed position in the way of the movement path of the carriage 153 after the present processing of a medium is completed, the carriage can start dealing with the next processing of a medium in a short time.
