A filtration apparatus has a horizontally oriented permeate conduit on the floor of a tank. The conduit may be part of a pedestal. A module of filtering membranes may be placed above and communicate with the permeate conduit. The apparatus may also include scrubbing air conduits below the modules. The module may be of a variety of configurations including one with vertically oriented hollow fibers. In this configuration, a permeate collector at an upper potting head may be connected to the permeate conduit by a second permeate conduit. The apparatus is suitable among other things, for installation in a sand filter tank. Permeation may be by gravity flow and retentate may overflow into a trough above the modules.
