PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing unit which can make high speed focusing regardless of the positions of the photographing optical system. SOLUTION: This focusing unit has a photographing means to photoelectrically convert the image focused by the photographing optical system including a focusing lens into electric image signals, a signal acquisition means to move the above focusing lens to obtain signals based on the high frequency components in the above image signals with a 1st interval or a 2nd interval smaller than the 1st interval, and a focus detector to detect the focusing position from the signals obtained with the above 1st or 2nd intervals. When detecting the focusing position, it detects it from the above signals obtained with the 1st interval (S406, S430). When the above focusing lens moves in a 1st direction to obtain the above signals with the 1st interval, it obtains the signals again with the 2nd interval by moving the above focusing lens in a 2nd direction opposite to the 1st direction (S412, S413, S423).
