PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system which can monitor the state of equipment to be monitored such as a remote oil-immensed transformer, requires little maintenance trouble and has no malfunction due to external noise and whose system cost is low and to provide a liquid crystal optical switch. SOLUTION: The monitoring system is provided with a laser light source 101, a laser light source driving circuit 102, an optical branching part 103 provided in an optical transmission line with the laser light source as a start point to branch the optical transmission line into two lines, an optical signal switch 104 provided on one optical transmission line branched by the optical branching part, a light receiving device 105 provided at the end point of the one optical transmission line, a photoelectric converter 106 provided at the end point of the other optical transmission line branched by the optical branching part to generate driving power of the optical signal switch, an optical signal switch control circuit 107 for controlling the supply of the driving power generated by the photoelectric converter to the optical signal switch, and a laser light detection circuit 108 for detecting laser light received by the light receiving device.
