PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical receptacle which is suitable for miniaturization while assuring a desired transmission characteristic and to provide an optical module using the optical receptacle. SOLUTION: The optical receptacle X1 of the present invention comprises a fiber stub 10 including a ferrule 11 and an optical fiber 12, and a sleeve 20 for obtaining the centering between an optical fiber Pa of a plug ferrule P and an optical fiber 12 of the fiber stub 10. The optical fiber 12 of the fiber stub 10 has a smaller mode field diameter at the rear end side opposite to the side at which the optical fiber 12 is optically connected to the optical fiber Pa of the plug ferrule P than the mode field diameter at the front end side on the side at which the optical fiber 12 is optically connected to the optical fiber Pa of the plug ferrule P.
