PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric encoder capable of improving resolution without reducing the arrangement pitch of photodiodes, and improving the resolution, while suppressing decline of the S/N ratio of a detected signal. SOLUTION: This photoelectric encoder is equipped with the first and second photodiode groups G1, G2 which are adjacent in the deviated state in the array direction of slits 2a, 2b, etc.. A signal processing circuit 10 outputs the first rectangular wave signal VO1 based on four output signals output from the first photodiode group G1, and the second rectangular wave signal VO2 based on four output signals output from the second photodiode group G2. The first and second rectangular wave signals VO1, VO2 use a time required for a moving body 1 to move as long as the distance equivalent to a half of the arrangement pitch P of the slits 2a, 2b, etc. as one cycle, and has a phase difference of 90 degrees. Hereby, the photoelectric encoder for outputting the output signals VO1, VO2 having the double resolution of the slits can be realized. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
