PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter 1 having a speed reduction means for reducing the rotational speed of a motor 3 in three stages and capable of maintaining stable clutch performance. SOLUTION: This starter 1 comprises a planetary gear speed reducer 6 transmitting the rotational speed of the motor 3 to a drive shaft 5 after reducing the rotational speed, a first speed reduction gear 8 reducing the rotational speed of the drive shaft 5, a second speed reduction gear 10 transmitting the rotational speed of the first speed reduction gear 8 to the crank gear 9 of the engine after reducing the rotational speed, and a clutch 11 disposed between the first speed reduction gear 8 and the second speed reduction gear 10. The clutch 11 is so formed that the axial center position Os of a sprag 11c is aligned with the axial center position Og of the second speed reduction gear 10 in the axial direction. Thus, when the rotational speed of the first speed reduction gear 8 is transmitted to the second speed reduction gear 10, the inclination of the sprag 11c can be reduced or eliminated. As a result, the stable clutch performance can be maintained, and the rotational speed of the first speed reduction gear 8 can be efficiently transmitted to the second speed reduction gear 10.
