The engine has an external exhaust gas recirculation system and a cylinder head in which inlet ducts (2) and exhaust ducts (3) open up through inlet valves (A1, A2) and exhaust valves (E1, E2), respectively. The ducts are disposed according to a cross flow architecture permitting the creation of a swirl. The valve (E2) is reopened during an admission phase and is closed during an exhaust phase.
