Use of chaulmoogra oil, or its components, for treatment or prevention of excess fat and cellulitis, acts by inducing lipolysis

Use of chaulmoogra oil (A) and/or its components (B) in cosmetic or pharmaceutical compositions for treatment or prevention of excess fat and cellulite. ACTIVITY : Dermatological; Anorectic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Induction of lipolysis by competition for (i) the neuropeptide Y receptor or (ii) the alpha 2 adrenergic receptors to which prostanoids bind. Cultured human adipocytes were incubated with radiolabeled prostaglandin E2 and varying amounts of chaulmoogra oil (A) for 1 hour, then the amount of bound radioactivity was measured. In the absence of (A), the mean level was 10529 counts/min (cpm); compare 5007 cpm in presence of 5% (A). Corresponding figures for binding of radiolabeled neuropeptide Y to its receptor were 7280 cpm (no (A)) and 4805 cpm (5% (A)).
