The stick has a braking system allowing to slow down the descent of a handle (2) along a body (1) to dissipate energy of a hiker. The system permits the hiker to momentarily block an expansion of the stick, by a manual control, for raising and redirecting the stick when the handle is in a lower position, and then allowing the hiker to unbend the stick. The system permits the hiker to vary a frictional force between the handle and body.
