An isolated nucleic acid that encodes a polypeptide designated PRO1890 having the amino acid sequence in Figure 10 (SEQ ID NO:18) is described. The polypeptide is capable of affecting glucose or FFA uptake by adipocytes and/or capable of inducing chrondocyte redifferentiation. Preferably the nucleic acid has the sequence of Figure 9 (SEQ ID NO:17) or that deposited under ATCC accession number 203549.
