PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical writing type EC (electrochromic) display element having high display performance. SOLUTION: The optical writing display element has a first electrode layer, a layer containing an electrochromic dye, a second electrode layer, and a photoconductive layer on a substrate, and the display element is characterized in that at least either the first electrode layer or the second electrode layer is transparent; a semiconductor nanoporous layer is disposed on one surface or both surfaces of the transparent electrode layer and in between the electrode layers; and the semiconductor nano-porous layer contains the electrochromic dye.
