PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distal chip for positioning the stem of an artificial joint, which guides a stem to be inserted into a medullary cavity excellently in a cementless artificial joint, positions a distal end of the stem inserted in the medullary cavity at a position as planned, holds whole of the stem in a stable predetermined posture in the medullary cavity, and does not generate osteolysis and the looseness of the artificial joint even if the distal chip is used. SOLUTION: The distal chip 10 is attached near the stem distal end of the cementless artificial joint, guides the stem distal end so as not to hit the inner surface of a medullary cavity 4 when the stem 2 is inserted into the medullary cavity 4, and positions the distal end of the stem 2 inserted in the medullary cavity 4. The distal chip is composed of a biodegradable absorbable material. And the distal chip 10 has a horizontal cross section diameter larger than that near the stem distal end and provided with a fitting hole 11, a built-in projection, or a thread-engagement screw as an attaching means to the stem 2 so as to be eccentric from the axis P of the distal chip 10.
