The invention relates to a method for the operation of a network management system comprising nodes (A, M) which are used as manager and/or agent nodes. According to the invention, at least one node (A, M) communicates with at least one other node (A, M) using a peer-to-peer-protocol. The invention also relates to a network management system and to a node in a management network system which is used to carry out said method.
