<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable device with enhanced safety in loading and unloading a battery and detecting the state of battery loading, and protect its main unit from an unauthorized battery, such as a pirated battery. <P>SOLUTION: The state of battery loading is detected by detecting whether a power source and a ground line are properly connected or not, using another power source with its current limited. When it is determined from the result of the detection that the battery is properly loaded, regular power for circuitry is applied. Information in the battery is acquired.
