PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a low-cost noncontact-type apparatus for measuring a molten metal level, which can accurately measure the molten metal level. SOLUTION: The apparatus for measuring the molten metal level is equipped with an optical sensor 6, which can sense the existence of an object (molten metal 4) within a certain distance; a sensor-use window 5, which is disposed at a furnace cover 2 of a molten metal-holding furnace 1 and can transmit an incidence light 6a, emitted from the optical sensor 6 and a reflected light 6b from the surface 4a of the molten metal; an actuator 7 for adjusting the height position of the optical sensor 6; a position detection sensor 8 for detecting the height position of the optical sensor 6; and a controller 9 which computes the molten metal level, based on the detected results of the optical sensor 6 and of the position detection sensor 8.
