1,198,327. Epoxides; aromatic alcohols. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 26 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34297/67. Heading C2C. In a process for the epoxidation of olefins with a hydroperoxide of an alkylaromatic compound, (1) substantially all unconverted olefin and epoxide are removed from the epoxidation effluent; (2) 70-98% of the alkylaromatic compound in the residual epoxidation effluent are removed in a first distillation zone; (3) the compounds remaining are vaporized (to leave as residue the epoxidation catalyst), condensed, and the condensate distilled in a second distillation zone to remove the remainder of the alkylaromatic compound from by-product alkylaromatic alcohol. Preferably, propylene oxide is prepared from propylene with ethylbenzene or cumene hydroperoxides, and alphaphenylethanol or dimethylphenylcarbinol, respectively, are recovered. |
