PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for estimating and correcting an uplink frequency offset, using a ranging channel, in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing communication system.

SOLUTION: A base station device in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing communication system includes an FFT computing element which performs FFT computation on two successive OFDM symbols of a ranging signal received from a terminal and outputs the signal; a code demodulator that multiplies the signal from the FFT computing element by a ranging code allocated to the terminal and outputs the signal; an adder that sums up the signal from the code demodulator for each FFT window and outputs the sum; a multiplier that multiplies the complex conjugate of a sum for the first FFT window by a sum for the second FFT window and outputs the resultant value; and a frequency offset estimator that uses the output value of the multiplier to estimate an uplink frequency offset for the terminal.
