PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus that is small in size even though it has a drive section. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises: an imaging unit 2 having a photo-electric conversion section 8 for photo-electrically converting an optical image into an electric signal; an optical unit 4 for forming the optical image of a subject onto the photo-electric conversion section 8; and the drive section 5 for driving at least part of the optical unit 4 in the direction of an optical axis. The drive section 5 includes a motor 25 having a drive axis perpendicular to the optical axis of the optical unit 2, and a drive gear 25 disposed on the drive shaft of the motor 24. The dimension of the drive section 5, which includes the motor 24 and the drive gear 25, in a direction perpendicular to the drive section 5 is almost identical to the width of the imaging unit 2.
