PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relative position detector less liable to cause malfunction and formed compactly and inexpensively. SOLUTION: This relative position detector comprises an accelerator 11 and an enclosure, relatively displaceable with respect to each other. A permanent magnet 17 is disposed on the accelerator 11. In the enclosure, a digital Hall IC 21 is disposed for outputting a detection signal on a total closure positionθo, based on magnetic flux density of a magnetic field formed by the permanent magnet 17. In the permanent magnet 17, south poles and north poles are disposed side-by-side in a relative displacement direction while the Hall IC 21 is structured so as to undergo magnetic force from the permanent magnet 17 at all times in all the domain where the accelerator 11 and the enclosure are displaced relative to each other.
