A light emitting system includes an LED structure outputting light in a pattern about an axis. The light emitting system also includes an optical coupling device (10) having a central axis and a reflecting surface positioned relative to the LED structure to accept light from the LED structure and to direct the light to exit the optical coupling device in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central axis. The light emitting system further includes at least one light guide (84) positioned relative to the optical coupling device to accept light emitted from the optical coupling device.
