A reel mower assembly including a reel mower (120) rotatably mounted to a frame (16), a drive (15) operative to rotate the reel (30) about a reel axis (RA), and at least one backing (32) mounted to the frame (16). The reel mower further includes a bedknife retainer (33) fastened to the backing (32) in an operating position, a bedknife (36) interposed between the backing (32) and the bedknife retainer (33) such that the bedknife (36) is oriented in cutting relationship with the reel (30), and an engagement device (35) operative to prevent sliding movement of the bedknife (34) with respect to the backing (32). Alternatively, the reel mower assembly includes a bedknife retainer (33) fastened to the backing (32) in an operating position, and a bedknife (46A, 46B) carried by the bedknife retainer (33).
