PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system capable of making angular distribution on a cross section sensitive to the angular distribution in a PBS (polarization beam splitter) arranged in a color separating/synthesizing system smaller than that on a cross section insensible to the angular distribution. SOLUTION: Regarding the illumination optical system for splitting light emitted from a light source on a first plane parallel to an optical axis, and where the PBS is relatively sensitive to the angular distribution, forming a plurality of first light source images with the split light in a first light source image area, and guiding a luminous flux from the plurality of first light source images to a surface to be illuminated, and also, splitting light from the light source on a second plane parallel to the optical axis, but, vertical to the first plane, and where the PBS is relatively insensible to the angular distribution, forming a plurality of second light source images with the split light in the second light source image area, and then, guiding the luminous flux from the plurality of second light source images to a surface to be illuminated, the width of the first light source image area in the first plane is narrower than the width of the second light source image area in the second plane.
