The modulator according to the invention is based on the modulation of a PLL, with the bandwidth of the PLL being variable. The modulator also has a means ( 14, 15 ) for determination of a signal (phi<SUB>r</SUB>(kT<SUB>s</SUB>); FDEV) which is characteristic of the modulation shift of the modulated signal. Furthermore, the modulator contains a comparison means ( 16 ) for comparison of this signal with a signal (phi(kT<SUB>s</SUB>+tau); FDEVNOM) which is characteristic of the nominal modulation shift, as well as a means ( 18 ) for variation of the bandwidth as a function of the output signal from the comparison means ( 16 )
