PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optical waveguide type semiconductor optical switch in which a timing adjustment of a plurality of optical switch components can be facilitated. SOLUTION: The present invention provides an improved switch which has ports where a light signal enters or exits and a plurality of optical waveguides where a light signal is branched into two and further propagated, and which selects an optical waveguide to propagate the light signal and allows the light signal to exit from a desired port in the exit ports. The optical switch includes: an initial stage optical switch disposed in a branch portion of the optical waveguide to switch to a path in an optical waveguide which propagates a light signal to a desired port; and a rear stage optical switch disposed at a branch portion in a rear stage than the initial stage optical switch, the rear stage optical switch switching to a path which does not propagate leaked light from the initial light switch to any exit port to the outside. The ports, optical waveguides, and initial stage and rear stage optical switches are fabricated on one substrate, and the initial stage and rear stage optical switches change paths of a light signal by changing refractive indices by carrier injection.
