PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device and a projector capable of easily realizing the improvement of the cooling efficiency of an optical component and realizing the facilitation of miniaturization. SOLUTION: The optical device 44 is equipped with a color composing optical device 444 as which a prism assembly 444X is set so that optical path length from a 1st incident surface 444A<SB>0</SB>to an emitting surface 444D<SB>0</SB>and optical path length from a 2nd incident surface 444B<SB>0</SB>to the emitting surface 444D<SB>0</SB>are the same respectively, while optical path length from a 3rd incident surface 444C<SB>0</SB>to the emitting surface 444D<SB>0</SB>is set to be shorter than optical path length in the prism assembly 444X for red light and blue light, and the projector is equipped with the optical device 44. Since a member for heat radiation 450 having optical path length equivalent to an amount by which the optical path length set to be shorter is shorter than the other is disposed in an optical path, an emitting side polarizing plate 443 is formed on the member for heat radiation 450 and cooling for the emitting side polarizing plate 443 is efficiently performed.
