PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which controls back light and gamma characteristic, etc., by analyzing an inputted image, the display device having high performance by eliminating deterioration in picture quality and delay of image display. SOLUTION: The display device has a light valve portion which comprises a plurality of pixels, a lighting portion which lights up it, a data analysis portion which analyzes image data, an image memory which stores the image data until an analysis is completed, a display data conversion portion which converts the stored image data based upon an analysis result to generate display data of the light valve portion, and a control portion composed of a lighting adjustment portion which adjusts the quantity of light emission of the lighting portion based upon the analysis result. The lighting portion is individually controllable in a direction corresponding to the forward direction of display of inputted image data at the light valve portion and divided by (n), and determination of a data conversion quantity and a light emission quantity by the control portion is repeated (n) times for one-picture display, and applied to respective regions of the lighting portion and light valve portion region corresponding thereto.
