Disclosed is a continuously operating single-shaft mixing and kneading machine for kneadable materials. Said mixing and kneading machine comprises a housing, a screw shaft (2) that is rotatably disposed therein, and a drive unit (4) for the same. The housing and the screw shaft (2) define a gap (7) through which the material is conveyed from a drawing-in zone (A) to a discharge port (9). According to the invention, the gap (7) is provided with a conical section (7b) at least in a selected area of a processing zone (B), which is located between the drawing-in zone (A) and the discharge port (9), while the width (b) of the conical gap section (7b) is adjustable.
