An apparatus and a method reducing the power dissipation between consecutive read/record action in an optical drive system are disclosed. A power down and a regain power sequence are provided where the apparatus comprising means for switching off the radiation source between consecutive read/record actions and thereby removing the radiation spot from the data storage medium and means for causing the radiation spot to be returned to substantially the same position on the optical storage medium upon subsequently switching on the radiation source. Prior to switching off the radiation source one or more reference values representing a compensation output of the servo control arrangement are determined, and the control output of the servo control arrangement is determined from the reference values while the radiation source is switched off.
