The device has a transmission coil pair with a transmission coil (S1) and a first coil (E1) of a receiving coil arrangement (E1,E2), whereby the transmission coil emits a stimulation field for inducing eddy currents in a metal trigger (1) near the proximity switch that produce a voltage-induced eddy current field in the first coil of the receiving coil arrangement. The coils of the receiving coil arrangement are arranged and connected so that the stimulation field produces a difference voltage. A compensation coil pair (S2,E2) is almost uninfluenced by the eddy current field.
