PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To promote quick activation of a catalyst while suppressing emission of HC during a period from cranking start to activation of exhaust emission control catalyst in a direct injection spark ignition type internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Flammable air fuel mixture is formed in an inside cavity 5a and an upper space capacity thereof in a relatively light load operation zone and flammable air fuel mixture is formed in an outside cavity 5b and an upper space capacity thereof in a relatively heavy load operation zone in an operation zone in which stratified combustion is performed. Flammable air fuel mixture richer than stoichiometric condition is formed in the outside cavity 5b and the upper space capacity thereof to perform stratified combustion even in the relatively light load operation zone when temperature rise of the catalyst is demanded.
