This invention relates to a process for making a series of 1,6-disubstituted piperidin-2-one, 3,4-disubstituted 1,3-oxazinan-2-one, 3,4-disubstituted 1,3-thiazinan-2-one, and 4,5-disubstituted morpholin-3-one derivatives, which are agonists of the EP₄ subtype of prostaglandin E2 receptors. The compounds are useful in the treatment of glaucoma and other conditions that are related to elevated intraocular pressure in the eye of a patient. The compounds are also useful for mediating the bone modeling and remodeling processes of the osteoblasts and osteoclasts.
