摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moving picture coding method and apparatus for decreasing the number of macro blocks requiring a large searching area and reducing a computation amount for searching a motion vector while detection accuracy of the motion vector is maintained even when the number of the macro blocks is small. <P>SOLUTION: A moving picture is divided into blocks each comprising a prescribed number of horizontal pixels and a prescribed number of vertical lines, the blocks are classified into first blocks to which a large searching area is set and second blocks to which a small searching area is set. In a first step, the motion vector of the first blocks is detected, and in a second step, interpolation processing is carried out from motion vectors of a plurality of the first steps.
