摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved regeneration start method for starting regeneration of NOx absorption catalyst at proper time and to provide a controller. <P>SOLUTION: This regeneration start method 44 for NOx absorption catalyst 30 in exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine 10 comprises a step for deciding amount of accumulated NOx absorption catalyst, a step 40 for deciding a determining value being a function of the amount of accumulated NOx absorption catalyst, a step 42 for comparing the determining value with a threshold value, and a step 44 for starting regeneration as a function of the result of comparison. In this method, the step 40 for deciding the determining value has a step 36 for forming a first part determining value being a function of accumulated NOx of absorption catalyst, a step 38 for forming a second part determining value being a function of operation parameter of the internal combustion engine 10, and a step 40 for connecting both part determining values with the determining value.
