PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display characteristic detecting apparatus for easily setting the optimum black display voltage in a liquid crystal display module. SOLUTION: First and second photosensors 2 and 3 are disposed opposite to each other in a white display area 1b and a black display area 1c set in a display surface of a homogeneous type liquid crystal display module 1, respectively, outputs of the photosensors 2 and 3 are inputted in a differential amplifier 6 and output potential difference outputted from the differential amplifier 6 is supplied to an oscilloscope 15 via a variable gain amplifier 13 performing gain compensation and an adding machine 14 performing offset compensation. An adjustment operator sets the optimum black display voltage by operating the volume of a variable resistor 1e provided at the liquid crystal display module 1 while observing the oscilloscope 15 and fixing the volume so that the value of the output potential difference shows the maximum value.
