PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for driving an electrolytic capacitor that exhibits excellent solubility in a solvent which is predominantly composed of ethylene glycol, and has a constituent capable of increasing withstand voltage. SOLUTION: A carboxylic acid such as azelaic acid, adipic acid, benzoic acid, or the like, or its ammonium salt, amine salt or the like, and boracic acid or its ammonium salt are combined to the solvent that is predominantly composed of ethylene glycol. In addition, 0.1 to 5.0 weight percent of polyvinyl methyl ketone having an average molecular weight of 800 to 1,700 as indicated by a formula are combined, and thus an electrolyte for driving an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is provided that has low specific resistance as well as high withstand voltage.
