A method and a system for detecting the depth information of a subject are provided to divide an area, which at least two subjects occupy in an image, into an object area and an overlapped area using outline information when there are the at lest two subjects in one image, thereby detecting the depth information of the at lest two subjects accurately. A method for detecting the depth information of a subject comprises the following steps of: extracting the outline information of a first subject and a second subject respectively(S110); detecting the overlapped area of the first subject and the second subject from the extracted outline information(S120); detecting the time difference of the first subject and the second subject from an image respectively(S130); and detecting the depth information of the first subject, the second subject, and the overlapped area from the detected time difference(S140).
