Metals of Groups IVa and Va of the Periodic System (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb or Ta) or alloys thereof are produced by reducing at least one halide (preferably chloride) of these metals with at least one alkali metal or alkaline earth metal amalgam, the product of this reaction being treated with an aqueous solution containing a substance or substances which combine with the ions of the Group IVa or Va metals to form water soluble compounds, the mercury then being removed from the amalgam by distillation to leave the desired metal or alloy. The treatment solution may be diluted HF (e. g. 10-40% acid) or a dilute solution of a non-oxidizing acid (HCl or H 2 SO 4 ) having a complex former (oxalic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, salicylic or sulphosalicylic acid) added thereto. Alloys may be made by mixing amalgams prior to distillation or by using mixed halides in the reduction step.</p> |
