A spring seat 22 is secured to the stem 17 of a poppet valve by means of a cotter comprising two parts 24 defining annular beads 44-46 which co-operate with grooves 31-33 in the head of the stem. Each part 24 has an inverted T-shaped slot 41 (Fig. 5) and is split at 42 from the major diameter end thereof to the foot of the slot. Tabs 37a at the bottom of a cylindrical extension 36 of each cotter part retain the latter within the conical bore 27 of the seat and act as stops to limit the upward movement of the parts when the seat-cotter assembly is forced on to the stem. During the assembly, the parts 24 pivot outwardly relative to each other about edge 28. A peripheral groove 40 in the cotter and seat counterbore 29 permit such pivotal movement. The radial depths of the beads and grooves may increase towards the end 34 of the stem. Alternatively the angle between the axis and the conical bottom surface of the groove may increase towards the end 34. |
