An image forming apparatus and its control method are provided to perform printing by changing between air paper feeding and roller paper feeding to form an image at a high speed. A CPU obtains a state of an air paper feeding unit(S1). The CPU determines whether preparation of sheets at the air paper feeding unit has been completed(S2). When the CPU determines that preparation of sheets has been completed, the CPU executes a received printing operation by feeding a sheet(S3). If preparation of sheets at the air paper feeding unit has not been completed, preparation of air paper feeding starts(S5). When it is determined that a printing operation by roll paper feeding is inputted before preparation of the air paper feeding is completed(S6), a sheet is fed from a deck or a cassette according to roll paper feeding to execute the received printing operation(S7).
