PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce damage at the time of wire-bonding a gold wire and to propagate the fundamental mode of a semiconductor laser without cutting off, in a semiconductor laser having a ridge optical waveguide; and to suppress the light output kink in a semiconductor laser module. SOLUTION: In a semiconductor laser device where a low refractive index region 16 having a prescribed width is provided on the outside of a ridge optical waveguide 15, and further a high refractive index region 17 having a higher refractive index than that of the region 16 is provided on the outside of the region 16, a configuration is used where a normalized frequency determined by the ridge optical waveguide and the low refractive index region is made to be equal to or smaller thanπ/2, and the electric field intensity of light at the boundary between the low refractive index region and the high refractive index region is made to be equal to or smaller than the electric field intensity multiplied by 5/1000 of light at the central portion of the ridge optical wave guide.
