PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a hydroxy compound by converting a hydrocarbon compound to the hydroxy compound, having excellent characteristics such as basically without forming byproducts, hence without requiring the treatment of the byproducts and discharged water, and capable of producing only the objective hydroxy compound extremely efficiently and economically. SOLUTION: This method for producing the hydroxy compound comprises a chlorination process, a hydrolysis process, a hydrochloric acid-separating process, a hydrogen chloride-separating process, a water-separating process, an oxidation process and a chlorine-separating process. As the hydrocarbon, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons such as methane, ethane and propylene, aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, of which aromatic rings may be substituted by nitro, amino, alkyl (except for methyl), etc., and further other than the above single ring type aromatic compounds, polycyclic aromatic compounds such as having naphthalene ring, anthracene ring, etc., can be used.
