PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a forsterite single crystal, by which the forsterite single crystal suitable for an optical element of an optical filter, a solid laser or the like can be obtained in a good yield without causing cracks, breakage and bending of a crystal, and as a high quality crystal in which defects such as air bubbles are not incorporated inside the crystal and which has a large diameter of≥50 mm. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the forsterite single crystal by a Czochralski method, a single crystal is pulled by using a forsterite single crystal in an orientation within±5°with respect to b-axis as a seed crystal.
